Mini Hunger Course
Political Causes of Hunger
War, Repression, Public spending priorities, Corruption.
- War: Disrupts economic and social activity and creates refugees. Major factor
in third world hunger.
- Repression: Usually affects particular social or ethnic groups. Denies full
access to economic opportunities and political participation.
- Public Spending Priorities: Insufficient public investment. Spending geared
toward military or security forces and away from education, health and infrastructure.
Major problem for third world countries which can't afford both.
- Corruption: Inefficient waste of scare resources toward enriching an undeserved
few. Contributes to insufficient spending on human resources.
